Some light reading...

So I was doing a little brushing up on Somalia because, well, it never hurts to be well-informed about Somalia, and I came across this sentence in the Wikipedia article that caused me to laugh out loud:

"In June 2006, the Alliance for the Restoration of Peace and Counter-Terrorism warlords lost Mogadishu after several months of sporadic fighting."

The 'peace and counter-terrorism warlords'. Can someone tell me how that works exactly?

"Hey, who are you? Me? I'm a peace warlord!"

It sounds like a complete oxymoron right? But to me it also sounds like US foreign policy the last eight years. Which would also make me laugh if it wasn't so tragic!

No idea where you stand politically so I'm not trying to dig trouble, that's just my honest reaction.

Meanwhile I suppose there is a kind of logical loophole in that being for 'restoration of peace' can allow a period of short term violence to impose your rule which supposedly brings about the desired stability...Maybe?

It's good to remember that Wikipedia can be edited by anyone at any time. People edit articles to fit their views all the time.

Life is full of ironies if you're stupid enough to go looking for them. Take last night for example. I leave for Sudan in three days. It isn't understatement to say that Sudan is awash in guns. And yet last night, after having lived (on and off) rather peaceably in Washington, DC for the past eight years, some friends and I got held up at gunpoint. The first thing that came to mind when the guy pulled out the gun and demanded money was how terribly inconvenient the timing was. I mean, c'mon, I don't have time to cancel and get new credit cards! My first thought was, "are you kidding me? I'm going to a place with 'real' guns and 'real' violence and here I am getting mugged on a quiet DC street? I have to get back to Baltimore to pack!
