Would you rather...

I love those books. The ones that are filled with 'absurd dilemmas to ponder' like: Would you rather live in a world where Afros were mandatory for members of Congress or where it was legal, in fact encouraged, to crucify mimes...or... Would you rather give blood or read Hamlet?

Well, I would like to add this one. Would you rather live without electricity or without water. This might seem like a no-brainer to some. Electricity, of course. But, living on the equator where it is light for 12 hours and dark for 12 hours a day, being in the dark for 12 hours a day gets old really quick. But, of course, if you then choose to be without water instead you can't wash your dishes, clothes, shower, or flush the toilets. This also gets old pretty quickly.

Luckily, we haven't had to make that choice here because the powers-that-be who are in charge of the utilities ensure that we have a day or two without electricity, followed by a day or two without water. See, so we never have to choose. Isn't that nice of them?

I was just catching up on some of your blog posts and I have to comment on the no electricity or no water comment. I have lived with both options, and I prefer no electricity. When the power is off you can still read by candle light, cook over gas, and wash dishes or take a shower. Without water....its just to keep on with your daily routines. And I also agree...both out at the same time is fully annoying.

An introduction to violence

Life is full of ironies if you're stupid enough to go looking for them. Take last night for example. I leave for Sudan in three days. It isn't understatement to say that Sudan is awash in guns. And yet last night, after having lived (on and off) rather peaceably in Washington, DC for the past eight years, some friends and I got held up at gunpoint. The first thing that came to mind when the guy pulled out the gun and demanded money was how terribly inconvenient the timing was. I mean, c'mon, I don't have time to cancel and get new credit cards! My first thought was, "are you kidding me? I'm going to a place with 'real' guns and 'real' violence and here I am getting mugged on a quiet DC street? I have to get back to Baltimore to pack!
